Davarie Weekend was born from unimaginable loss but has grown into an annual celebration of life, legacy, and love. Honoring the memory of Davarie Armstrong, a vibrant young man whose life was tragically cut short by gun violence in the summer of 2020, the weekend brings together community, competition, and purpose.

What began as a way for family and friends to keep Davarie’s spirit alive has transformed into a powerful movement. Now in its 5th year, Davarie Weekend serves as both a remembrance and a call to action—raising awareness about youth violence, providing healing space for grieving families, and creating opportunities for young people to thrive.

At the heart of the weekend are the 5K Run, 7v7 Football and 3v3 Basketball Tournaments, reflecting Davarie’s love for sports, teamwork, and the joy of competition. Athletes from across the region come together—not just to play, but to stand for something greater. Each game is a tribute. Each point scored echoes Davarie’s passion, his leadership, and his dream of making a difference. But Davarie Weekend is more than games. It’s a fundraiser for hope and healing. Proceeds support the DJ Armstrong Foundation, which offers scholarships to students impacted by gun violence, and Scholarships to students to pursue higher education, giving youth access to life-changing experiences at YoungLife camps that Davarie loved deeply. Through laughter, tears, shared stories, and powerful moments of community, Davarie Weekend is a testament to what’s possible when grief turns into purpose. It reminds us that while we can’t change the past, we can shape a better future for our youth, our families, and our city. Davarie’s light continues to shine—not just in memory, but in every step, we take together toward change.

Davarie Armstrong was a vibrant, athletic, and magnetic young leader whose presence lit up every room and every life he entered. Known for his infectious smile, uplifting spirit, and unwavering confidence, Davarie believed that “your vibe attracts your tribe.” He lived this truth, surrounding himself with positivity and purpose while inspiring unity across cultures and communities.

A multi-sport athlete at South High School and longtime member of the Pirates football organization, Davarie excelled in football, basketball, and track, earning varsity letters and scholarship opportunities. His #5 and #27 jerseys have been retired in his honor, commemorating his excellence both on and off the field.

Beyond athletics, Davarie was a dedicated student, two-time Black Male Summit Scholar, and a passionate community servant. From volunteering at block parties and toy drives to participating in Comcast Cares Day and Habitat for Humanity projects, he embodied service. His faith, strengthened through Young Life, guided his leadership and family-centered values.

Tragically taken by gun violence in 2020, Davarie’s legacy continues to uplift and empower through the DJ Armstrong Foundation. Scholarships, youth sports tournaments, a 5K run, and A Mother’ s Love, a support group for grieving mothers, all honor his enduring impact. A mural at South High School, a scholarship in his name, and community efforts to rename All Star Stadium after him are lasting testaments to a life lived with purpose.

Davarie Armstrong was more than an athlete; he was a changemaker, a peacemaker, and a reminder that greatness lives on through love, action, and legacy.
