A Divine Interruption: The Story of One Brave Momma

How does that sit with you? I could think of a handful of times I ignored an opportunity to offer a helping hand. This time it would be different."

The doctor had already scheduled the abortion.

I received a call from a local pregnancy center, which had been contacted by a hospital social worker desperately seeking shelter for a young woman. She was homeless, alone, and had just found out she was pregnant. The hospital was preparing to discharge her—back onto the streets.

A few weeks prior, she had found temporary refuge sleeping in the basement of a local church and receiving meals from kindhearted members. But that wasn’t a long-term solution.

This young woman had come to the United States on a full-ride basketball scholarship, playing for a highly ranked college program. When she developed a severe thyroid condition and could no longer perform, the school released her from her scholarship—leaving her without a safety net and with nowhere to turn.

During her ER visit for that thyroid condition, doctors told her she was pregnant—a shock she wasn’t prepared for. And sadly, the response she received was not hope, but pressure:

“How can you take care of it?”

“How will you provide for it?”

Just like that, her baby became an it.

After a brief discussion with my husband, I went to the hospital to meet her—to listen, to pray, and to decide whether we could offer her a place in our home... or walk away. But in our hearts, we already knew—we couldn’t walk away.

We had been empty nesters for three years, and suddenly we were reminded: an adult dependent is just that—dependent. She needed more than shelter, food, clothing, and transportation. She needed emotional safety. She needed spiritual support. She needed love.

In those first weeks, she wrestled with fear, shame, and uncertainty. Abortion was still on her mind. But together—with prayer, compassion, and the help of her mother (speaking encouragement all the way from Nigeria)—we helped her see that she had options. She could choose life.

And she did.

Today, our brave momma and her beautiful baby girl are thriving. She’s adjusting to her new normal. Her dream? A loving husband, four children, and one day bringing her mom and nephew from Nigeria to live with her.
