The need for awareness, support, and mobilization is urgent.

These abdominal cancers tend to present at late stages, making effective treatment more difficult and harder to access. Critically, patients dealing with these cancers often face delayed diagnoses - including cases that go undiagnosed or are misdiagnosed. Treatments like cytoreductive surgery and HIPEC (a procedure to circulate heated chemotherapy directly into the abdomen) can be lifesaving, but only if patients are diagnosed early and referred to specialists who understand their disease. Unfortunately, most people - patients, caregivers, doctors, and hospitals - don’t know enough about these advanced cancers and how to treat them. That’s where we come in.

About Abdominal Cancers

Abdominal cancers are tumors that can originate from different organs in the abdominal cavity (or the peritoneal cavity) including the appendix, colon, gallbladder, ovaries, pancreas, peritoneum, rectum, stomach, and uterus, among others. These advanced-stage cancers, also referred to as peritoneal surface malignancies or peritoneal carcinomatosis, spread throughout the peritoneal cavity and require specialized care such as the CRS/HIPEC treatment (cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy).

Abdominal Cancers Alliance

We are a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing support, education, and resources for patients and caregivers navigating the challenges of rare and advanced abdominal cancers, including the CRS/HIPEC (Cytoreductive Surgery and Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemotherapy) treatment option.

Our goal is to ensure that individuals diagnosed with rare and advanced abdominal cancers - peritoneal surface malignancies like gastrointestinal and gynecologic cancers - receive the best care possible through comprehensive support and access to reliable information. Key to realizing that goal is improving patient access to CRS/HIPEC treatments and ensuring that they receive timely, expert care.

Our work consists of three main areas of focus all centered on patients and caregivers: Awareness, Connection, and Navigation.

We aim to change the narrative of misdiagnosis and treatment of rare and advanced abdominal cancers by raising awareness, such that more patients and caregivers find the right path to treatment and the right providers earlier in their journey. The Alliance serves as the central hub for this community through every stage of the cancer journey, connecting patients and caregivers to organizations, support groups, and professionals. And we empower patient and caregiver navigation across their journey, from detection and diagnosis through treatment and survivorship.
