Our immigrant elders are facing a crisis of isolation and seeking ways to pass down their historic and cultural knowledge while they still can. Meanwhile, our bicultural youth struggle to find where they belong and a platform where their new ideas and fresh energy can be heard and respected.

The African Center for Community Development is the only non-profit in Dane County working to address the needs of these two unique groups by providing culturally competent social and educational programs for African older adults as well as African-roots youth. Here is what we have been up to so far this year:

Thanks to Baobab Senior circle, older adults have enjoyed exploring the zoo, walking the trails at the Aldo Leopold Nature Center, learning about traditional farming methods in The Gambia, and hearing histories passed down through generations about the hard work of cotton picking in the American South.
This month, the Youth Summer Program is serving 24 African youth with roots from six different countries to explore topics such as maintaining cultural identity, where in Africa where they want to travel and why, and reading and analyzing the classic novel Things Fall Apart by Nigerian author Chinua Achebe.

As we work to weave a tapestry across generations, we need your support to continue to offer inclusive, culturally enriching programming for our seniors and youth the rest of the year. ACCD does not receive any major government funding and depends on the support of community members just like you to help us obtain the funding we need for our programs.
