Black civic and nonprofit leaders are often the lifelines that improve lives and change the trajectory of many within Black communities. Many Black leaders establish nonprofits based on personal experiences and a desire to serve others with similar lived experiences. As such, they are deeply committed to their work, but the rewards come with significant, often invisible sacrifices—largely due to limited resources and funding. Less than 2% of funding from major foundations goes to Black-led organizations, and more than half of Black nonprofits report they would have to close their doors if just one or two grants were lost. This critical support should not be so fragile or dependent on external forces.

While there are encouraging efforts within the philanthropic community to address this funding gap, at Act Black, we believe the solution is multifaceted and requires support from within the community itself. We’re calling on everyday people in the Black communities to contribute their resources to help sustain Black-led, Black-serving nonprofits.

Historically, Black communities have always found ways to come together to create innovative, community-driven solutions that move us forward. In honor of that legacy, we issue a call to action: Act for Impact and contribute your time, talent, and resources to support community efforts. Every act makes an impact. Act Black.
