Madame Theremin, a new opera by composer Kennedy Verrett and librettist George M. Kopp will have its first full-length workshop performance on July 11th at the Ann Getty Center of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. To celebrate this milestone we're looking to enlarge our musical family. You can join...by adopting an opera singer! No papers to sign! About the opera: There are those who say no one cares about opera or ballet. [Cough! Chalamet!] Prove them wrong. Madame Theremin is an opera...about a ballet dancer! And you will care very much about Lavinia Williams, a Black dancer who married the Russian electronic music pioneer Leon Theremin in the 1930s. [Cue the theremin: woo-ee-oo.] In a time of turmoil very much like our own (Jim Crow laws, Hitler, Stalin, Great Depression) Lavinia finds strength and beauty in the spirits of her ancestors. Heed Mama Augustine, Lavinia's spirit guide: "Open the portal of your spirit. Loose the knot that binds your being to the certain. Gaze in the mirror, part the curtain."
