An AED, or automated external defibrillator, is a portable medical device that analyzes a person's heart rhythm and delivers an electric shock to restart the heart during sudden cardiac arrest. The VFW wants to put one in the building. We already have the bartenders set to attend training but we need your help to purchase the device.

How an AED Works

Analyzes Rhythm: Sticky electrode pads placed on the bare chest read the heart's electrical activity.
Determines Need: The device automatically decides if a shock is required and will only deliver one if necessary.
Guides the User: Built-in audio and visual prompts give step-by-step instructions so anyone can use it safely, even without prior training. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Why It Matters

Saves Lives: Combined with CPR, using an AED within the first few minutes of cardiac arrest dramatically increases survival rates.
Public Access: You can frequently find these devices mounted on walls in airports, schools, community centers, and office buildings.
Safety: You cannot accidentally shock someone; the machine checks the rhythm first and will not shock a healthy heart or a rhythm that doesn't require it. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6]
