On February 22, 2022 the Governor of Texas, Greg Abbott sent a letter to the Commissioner of Family Protective Services instructing the office to investigate gender-affirming care for transgender youth as child abuse. This “directive” created an obligation on medical practitioners to report care as abuse. And in short order, investigations of families with trans kids started.

While the ACLU of Texas, ACLU National and LAMBDA Legal have won a temporary restraining order, the impact is already being felt - Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston announced that it would no longer provide hormone therapy for transgender children due to “potential criminal legal ramifications” for doctors and families.

Unfortunately, this is merely the latest government attack on trans kids with legislation already passed that discriminates explicitly against trans children. And sadly, Texas continues to be a model for discriminatory laws in other states.
