Building the Future of AI... Together in New York City!

Led by AI experts and MCed by Darian Rodriguez Heyman, bestselling author of the new book, AI for Nonprofits, AI4NP Learning Labs are one-day, hands-on interactive workshops designed to help nonprofit and foundation professionals, consultants, and other changemakers harness the power of human-centered artificial intelligence to unlock AI's potential for good.

Sponsored by Diligent and co-hosted by Center for Excellence in Nonprofits (CEN), AI for Nonprofits Sprint, Advanced AI Society, and Board.Dev, the Learning Lab will convene mission-led leaders from across the Tri-State Area. Last year’s Silicon Valley Learning Lab sold out, with over 130 nonprofits represented, and by the end of the half-day program, 90% of delegates confirmed they were much more comfortable and excited to responsibly adopt AI tools, so we expect this year to fill up fast. Each delegate will enjoy practical, tactical tips and tools plus networking opportunities, and take home a free, signed copy of AI for Nonprofits.

Our program will begin with Heyman presenting a quick overview of the basics, including tips for mitigating risks associated with AI adoption, understanding AI’s superpowers, and best practices for prompt engineering, or learning how to “speak” AI. From there, delegates will enjoy several dynamic workshops led by the sector’s leading minds, with a focus on how AI can build your capacity and advance your goals around fundraising and grantmaking, marketing and community engagement, and program delivery and evaluation. You’ll also have a chance to mingle with your fellow attendees, introduce your work, and exchange challenges and corresponding solutions, experiencing what we think of as, “community in action.”

Registration is limited (first-come, first-served!) so register now to secure your spot.

Keynote | Cutting Through the AI Hype: What Nonprofits Actually Need to Know | Jim Fruchterman, Founder, Tech Matters & Author, Technology for Good

Everyone's talking about AI… but is your organization ready to separate signal from noise? In this workshop, a renowned MacArthur Fellow and tech-for-good pioneer will draw on three decades of building technology for the social sector to deliver the practical, hype-free perspective nonprofit leaders need right now. Jim will explore why the sector’s technology gap is widening in the age of AI, what kinds of organizations are actually seeing results, and where the real opportunities lie for nonprofits that don’t have dedicated tech teams or data scientists on staff. You’ll walk away with a clear-eyed understanding of what AI can and can’t do for your organization today. You’ll also receive a framework for making smart, mission-aligned technology investments without chasing trends.

Learning Objectives:

Separate Hype from Reality: Understand what AI can realistically deliver for nonprofits right now, and where the technology still falls short for the communities you serve
Close the Tech Gap: Learn practical strategies for strengthening your organization’s technology foundation, even without dedicated tech staff or large budgets
Make Mission-Aligned Tech Decisions: Apply a framework for evaluating technology investments that prioritizes impact over trendiness and puts the people you serve first

Workshop | Stop Waiting for the Perfect AI Policy: Put Staff Guidelines in Place This Week | Rich Leimsider, Director, AI for Nonprofits Sprint, Fund for the City of New York

Your staff are already using AI. Do they know what's okay? Many nonprofits are stuck waiting for a formal AI policy to clear board and legal review, and in the meantime staff are left to guess. In this hands-on session, the leader of a program that has brought AI training to more than 500 nonprofits will show you how to draft and share temporary AI staff guidelines right away. They'll be simple, plain-language guardrails that protect your organization now while the full policy catches up. Rich will also share top takeaways from the AI for Nonprofits Sprint's ongoing survey of 15,000 nonprofit staff, covering how they're actually using AI, what they hope it can do, and what worries them most. You'll leave with a ready-to-adapt template and a clear plan for getting it into your team's hands.

Learning Objectives:

Move from Paralysis to Progress: Learn why "placeholder" guidelines beat waiting for a perfect policy, and how to get leadership sign-off without a months-long process
Draft Guidelines That Staff Will Actually Use: Cover the essentials (data privacy, accuracy checks, transparency, approved tools) in language that encourages experimentation instead of shutting it down
Learn What 15,000 Nonprofit Staff Are Telling Us: Hear what the data shows about how staff are using AI, what they fear, and what they need from leadership, so your guidelines meet your people where they are

Featured Demo: BoardEffect by Diligent

Do you serve on a board, staff one, or support board work? Join the team from Diligent, our returning sponsor, for a live demo of BoardEffect, a board management platform built specifically for mission-driven organizations.

BoardEffect gives nonprofits, foundations, and other mission-driven boards one secure place to prepare and share board books, schedule meetings, assign and track tasks, vote on resolutions, and keep members engaged between meetings. Its newer AI features turn meeting notes and transcripts into polished minutes and generate summaries to speed up prep, so staff spend less time on admin and more time on mission.

Whether you’re an executive director, board chair, board member, or the person who assembles the board packet, you’ll see practical ways to make governance simpler, more transparent, and more secure.
