Ann Glaviano performs an animal dance. This solo is performed in a small gallery space to permit the observation of the strenuous work of a dancer in proximity and fine detail. Ann will remove one shoe, then the other shoe. The audience will turn off and on the stage lights, among other things. Tickets by reservation only. There is no cost for admission; donations are welcome.

TUESDAY, JULY 9 - MORNING CLASS: Substitution for the usual morning contemporary class. Ann will lead the class in engaging with some of her favorite tools and strategies for composition and performance. This class is geared to professional or aspiring dance artists, as well as artists in other disciplines, and any other open-minded people curious about artistic process who are willing to move their bodies through space. No "dance training" is required. Payment for class goes through Basin Arts per usual; drop-ins and regulars welcome. Basin Arts, 9:45am-11:15am.
TUESDAY, JULY 9 - BROWN BAG LUNCH / CONVO: Ann will talk about her experiences as a professional dance artist navigating the performing arts landscape of south Louisiana and the Southeast more broadly. Topics will likely include creative process, support, funding, production, residencies, ongoing training for pros, and the strategies deployed by the re:FRAME choreographic collective. Free and unticketed. BYO lunch (brown bag not actually required). Basin Arts, 11:30am-12:15pm.

BIO: Ann Glaviano is a writer, dance-maker, DJ, and born-and-raised New Orleanian. As a dance artist she maintains a wide-ranging practice: she's danced with the New Orleans Ballet Theatre, executed a lecture/demonstration alongside Deborah Hay, choreographed for Hulu, improvised the "ballerina rap" bit onstage with Hannibal Buress, and performed in a dystopic durational art installation in Dresden. Since 2013 she's directed the New Orleans–based performance project Known Mass, aesthetically and ethically motivated by devised theatre and DIY punk traditions, producing collaborative projects with local dancers, musicians, photographers, filmmakers, and visual artists. Her first dance film, 01_fieldrecording, with Chris Givens, had its world premiere in 2019 at Highways in Los Angeles. For more than a decade, Ann has run a friendly neighborhood dive-bar dance party called HEATWAVE! spinning dance jams on vinyl from 1957-1974; she has been featured in Elle and nominated by Offbeat as Best DJ in New Orleans. Her prose has appeared in Best American Short Stories, Tin House, and Slate, among other publications. In 2018, in recognition of her cross-disciplinary artistic achievements and track record of art community facilitation, Ann was honored as one of Gambit’s 40 Under 40.

Since 2019, the five of us have been side by side adventuring in the solo form while engaging in dance advocacy on behalf of our communities in south Louisiana, and the Southeast more generally, in protest of the national dance funding and presentation mechanisms that pretend artists in the Southeast don't exist. These mechanisms drive the siphoning of Southeastern artists to other parts of the country where artists can be more easily validated and supported by institutional infrastructure.

But all communities need artists. We don't just need art - we need artists. Artists as teachers, as mentors, as role models demonstrating that a life devoted to art-making is real and possible - but also artists as people who live in a place, invested as residents, as working professionals, as neighbors and friends.

Organizations like Basin Arts, helmed by artist organizers like Clare Cook, do essential work in our underresourced region to foster and retain artists in Louisiana, through facilitating arts creation, offering arts presentation, spurring artist growth, connecting artists to audiences, and building community through art.
