Our story

For two decades PLAEP has grown from a sixperson vision into a proven, community led response to HIV/AIDS, poverty and vulnerability across the Copperbelt and beyond. Founded in 2005, PLAEP was created to deliver longterm, locally driven solutions with internal and external support. We work through church engagement, school programs, caregiver/household economic empowerment, nutrition support, and promote environment care to protect children, support families, and keep young people healthy and in school.

Our impact

5,000+ students from poor communities reached since 2005 with access to education, school feeding, residential care, gospel outreach and life-skills training to improve school progression and retention and rescue from unsafe homes.
20,000+ young people reached with school-based HIV education since 2010.
3,000+ people reached since 2015 through HIV programs (PMTCT, care for adolescents and young women living with HIV, and support for children living with HIV) providing HIV education, life skills training, economic empowerment initiatives and nutrition support.
170+ community savings and lending groups formed since 2010, comprising 3,000+ members (mostly women) with access to training and group capital to grow enterprises and improve livelihoods.
70+ tons of millet, cassava and peanuts, annually processed by Sanshako Social Enterprise (est. 2017). The produce is sourced from over 200 smallholder farmers and sold through 60+ stores nationwide.

Why we’re fundraising

As PLAEP marks 20 years of transformational work that began from helping nine women access lifesaving HIV antiretroviral treatment (ART) to impacting an estimated 10,000 lives, we are launching a 20th Anniversary Campaign to raise US$200,000 by yearend. These funds will sustain and expand our core programs: school scholarships and school feeding, care for adolescent girls and young women living with HIV, residential care for girls in at risk ‘homes, economic strengthening for caregivers, and growth of PLAEP social enterprises that underpin livelihoods and organizational sustainability.
