Black Woman owned book press needs your help to release 3rd children's book- AND Animation!

The Turtle With An Afro is the first modern animal character whose experience AND likeness represent Black culture. We know that representation in children’s books and media is important, but it’s just as crucial to have diversity across those representations.

According to the Cooperative Children’s Book Center (CCBC), in 2019 just 12% of books centered Black human characters. By comparison, animal characters were featured in 29% , and 42 % had white protagonists. "Taken together, books about white children, talking bears, trucks, monsters, potatoes, etc. represent nearly three quarters of children’s and young adult books published in 2019.”

The bottom line? We need diverse animal books, too. The Turtle With An Afro series helps to fill this void.

ABOUT THE BOOK

In this second book in the TWA series, The Turtle With An Afro: A Star is Born, Turtle faces a new challenge- performing at the school talent show. Turtle is a spunky youngster who loves overcoming challenges, always rocking her kinky, coily Afro! To get caught up on the series, check out this animated version of the first book, The Turtle With An Afro.

Animating the story gets diverse stories in front of more children- we know how much they love cartoons and media. The stretch goal will support the development of a cartoon based on the book.

The book is scheduled for release in January 2022.
