ATABEY’s Treasure is coming back to BRC this year and better than ever…

Revamped. Remodeled. Re-energized.
ATABEY’S Treasure is making her return as she was intended to be!

We hope to turn this dream into a reality once again
but we need your help and support!

So, who is ATABEY?

ATABEY's Treasure is a fun, solar powered, interactive installation in the shape of an oversized fish
emerging from the dry lakebed of the Playa.
She will be 18 feet tall x 36 feet long made of last year’s recycled steel, aluminum and wire mesh.

The ancestral mother of the Taíno indigenous people of Puerto Rico & the Caribbean, ATABEY was worshiped as a goddess of freshwater and represents the Earth Spirit.

Given the environmental challenges the people of the island have experienced in the last six years, we chose to honor her spirit and dedicate ATABEY's Treasure to the resilient people of Puerto Rico to express the immediacy of taking action to conserve and protect our precious resources. In making the piece solar-powered, we also hope to continue promoting climate change awareness.

This year, we are linking arms with the nonprofit organization, Community Through Colors, whose goal is to provide food and sustainability education in Puerto Rico as well as provide renewable (solar) education and installation in the Caribbean.

ATABEY’s Treasure is partnering with local non-profit RuckusRoots to host an internship with youth from Environmental Charter School for this build. Local teens will assist NiNo over the summer as he and his team builds this sustainable public art piece before ATABEY heads to the Playa! Nino will then offer an in-school program this fall with RuckusRoots at ECM. 
We are excited to involve local youth in this sustainable arts opportunity!
