About The Riders

EARL

Earl Stout III, 42 years old from Groveville, New Jersey, is a co-founder of Carve 4 Cancer. He met Brent while volunteering with the Buddy program at Jefferson Hospital in Philadelphia, where Brent was undergoing his first stem cell transplant. Their friendship began on Christmas Eve in 2012. Earl is approaching 17 years of remission from Hodgkin's Lymphoma as of January 2024. This will mark his first ultra skate. Earl aims for 200 miles but might adjust his goal to 100 miles for his inaugural attempt at the 24-hour challenge. Sadly, Earl's mother was diagnosed with a rare adrenal carcinoma cancer in October 2019 and passed away in January 2020.

As a survivor, Earl faces long-term side effects from his treatments. In November 2019, he was diagnosed with hypothyroidism, a projected side effect from the radiation to the mantle area of his neck. Survivorship has also impacted his heart due to chemotherapy and radiation from his jawline to the top of the lungs. Radiation to the heart can cause arterial blockages, while the chemotherapy drug Adriamycin can slow heart contractions. Earl consistently advocates for a healthy, active lifestyle and views longboard skateboarding as both exercise and an alternative mode of transportation.

During the upcoming 24-hour challenge on February 15th to 16th at Homestead Speedway, Earl will skate in honor of his late mother, Edith Pulone; Brent Evans; Anne Palmer, who passed away from metastatic breast cancer in July 2020 and was an accomplished ultra skater holding a record in her age group; and Noel Korman, the founder of the Shralpers Union, whose ashes are scattered at Homestead Speedway. BOB

Bob Foster, 61 years old from Burlington, New Jersey, is no stranger to the ultra skate scene; this will be his second endeavor. He's set his sights on reaching 100 miles or potentially more in the push/pump/paddle discipline tailored to his age category. Bob's skateboarding journey began at the age of 10, spending his teenage years mastering vert ramps. His sporting prowess extends beyond skating—he competed in Mt. Bike Observed Trials (obstacle courses), riding since the early 1980s. In 1987, he claimed the title of New Jersey State Champion and secured a spot in the top 10 nationally that year. Recently, Bob has been dedicating more time to long-distance skateboarding. In the 2023 ultra skate, he covered 52 miles, igniting his determination to surpass the 100-mile mark in 2024.

Bob will be riding in honor of his Mom, Nancy J. Foster. Bob and Earl forged a connection in the spring of 2023, skating together and building a strong friendship. Bob's vibrant personality is a constant source of high fives and positive vibes!

TRAVIS

Travis Holmes-Upshur 33 years old from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, has a background in high school track and field. He ventured into longboard skateboarding in the spring of 2023 and connected with Earl and the Philadelphia Longboarding community during the past summer. Travis has embarked on his athletic journey within the distance skating community, already leaving a notable impression with his boundless energy.

Travis's vibrant spirit resonates with the kind of positivity that Brent would truly appreciate! His upcoming participation in the ultra skate marks his debut, and he aims to achieve a remarkable 150 miles in his age category for the push/pump discipline during the 24-hour endurance challenge. Cancer has touched Travis's life deeply; he lost his father, Paul Holmes JR to liver cancer in July 2022.
