April is Autism Acceptance Month — and this year, it’s also a special milestone for us! In 2026, ASAN turns 20 years old.

For two decades, we’ve stood by the idea that all means all. All autistic people deserve rights, dignity, and self-determination. All of us deserve to be heard, no matter how we communicate. And all of us deserve a future free from violence, institutionalization, and discrimination.

Over the last 20 years, ASAN has fought alongside our community for real change — from pushing back against institutionalization to advocating for safe, inclusive education, community living, and policies that respect our rights. But this year has reminded us how much work remains. Our community has faced misinformation about autism, attacks on our rights, and policies that not only put us at risk — they intentionally endanger us.

That’s why Autism Acceptance Month isn’t just a celebration. It’s a call to action. Together, we will keep fighting against violence, against institutionalization, and against the systems that treat disabled people as less than. And we will keep building a future where autistic people can live full lives in our communities.
