Train 100 Teachers to Teach the Truth

I’m going to be direct with you.

In 2018, I worked with the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to develop and enact the City and County of San Francisco’s Racial Equity Ordinance. That led to the creation of the first-ever citywide Office of Racial Equity in 2019. I trained 20,000+ San Francisco city employees on implicit bias, systemic racism, and anti-Black institutional practices—and brought that same rigor to Mayo Clinic, UCSF School of Medicine, Stanford, and Johns Hopkins.

That work is grounded in evidence: four centuries of court cases, presidential statements, legislative history, and public health data—not opinion.

California has now required Ethnic Studies for high school graduation beginning with the Class of 2030. Across the state, teachers are being assigned to teach ethnic studies without adequate preparation. When that happens, one of two things is likely:

the course gets watered down into feel-good “diversity” that avoids the hard truths, or
teachers try to address White supremacy, anti-Blackness, and systemic racism without the historical and legal grounding their students deserve—often triggering organized backlash.

Blackademics is stepping in with a solution built for the moment.

Our Goal

Raise $50,000 by Giving Tuesday (December 2) to fund the Blackademics Bootcamp: Teach for Liberation: A practice-first intensive for K–12 educators, training 100 California teachers in a multi-day summer program.

What This Is (and Isn’t)

This is not a one-off workshop. It’s intensive formation in:

The legal architecture of race in America: case law, policy, and precedent that make the history teachable and defensible.
Trauma-informed pedagogy: how to teach racial violence and its legacies with care, clarity, and skill.
Political strategy: practical guidance for navigating parent pushback, school board scrutiny, and district politics—without being silenced or punished.

It’s the same evidence-based approach I delivered at Mayo and UCSF—adapted for high school classrooms.

Why It Matters

Every well-prepared teacher reaches an average of ~150 students each year. Training 100 teachers means ~15,000 students learning accurate history with rigor and care—in year one alone.
