At Camden Catholic High School, we were blessed to know Mr. Phipps not just as a teacher, but as a mentor, a guide, and a friend. His passion for math, his unwavering support for students, and his deep commitment to their well-being left a lasting mark on our community, one that continues to inspire us today.

Last May, during Mental Health Awareness Month, Camden Catholic raised over $28,000 in honor of Jack Phipps which was designated to;

1. Providing physical upgrades to our guidance spaces including renovations and furniture;

2. Staffing a mental health counselor in the guidance office; and

3. Dedicating & renaming the guidance office for Mr. Phipps.

CCHS, along with Jack’s immediate and extended family, thank you for your tremendous generosity.

This May, we are honoring Jack’s memory by launching two new and equally important initiatives that reflect the values he lived every day:

🧮 The Jack Phipps Memorial Math Award

Awarded to a rising senior who demonstrates outstanding achievement in mathematics, this scholarship will celebrate academic excellence while preserving Jack’s love for learning and his dedication to nurturing talent.

🧠 The Camden Catholic Mental Health Awareness Speaker Series

Launching in the 2025-2026 school year, this series will bring important conversations about mental health directly to our students. By providing education, support, and open dialogue, we aim to destigmatize mental health challenges and equip our young people with tools to thrive — a cause Jack championed with every moment of encouragement he gave.

Student mental health is a growing concern among educators nationally. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services Office of Population Affairs, 49.5% of adolescents (13-18) have suffered from a mental health disorder at some point in their lives.

Reports from the CDC offer that in general, the number of adolescents reporting poor mental health is increasing and that educational institutions can work to thwart these trends by 1) intervening with the establishment of strong bonds between educators and students, and by 2) working with parents to create protective relationships with students to help them grow into healthy adulthood.

Given these statistics, it's clear that Camden Catholic must be prepared to prioritize services for students dealing with mental health issues like anxiety, depression, ADHD, eating disorders, and more. We are thrilled to be able to do so in honor of one of Camden Catholic's greatest advocates for students' wellbeing.
