Sweet, docile, little Cream came to us with two other adorable poodle mixes last November. We promoted her for adoption as part of a bonded pair.

We noticed that Cream prefers to potty in her room rather than outdoors, while the other two are potty-trained. After her recent grooming, we discovered why.

Cream has an extra hole under her tail (too graphic to show). Normally internal parts—her urethra (the tube that passes urine) and part of her female reproductive system—are fully exposed. There should be skin over that area that encloses those body parts.

Prior vet exams didn't discover this congenital defect because the abnormality was covered by fur. No one would have expected to see anything unusual there. Once seen, we consulted several very experienced vets. Nobody had seen anything like it!

With the internal area being external, she is prone to ongoing infections. Cream is currently being treated for a UTI.

Cream saw a reproductive specialist. She requires special surgery where the surgeon will graft moist skin—most likely from inside her mouth—to enclose that area. Cream has a surgical consultation this week. It's a tricky procedure that is necessary to give her the best chance for a long life.
