About the Show

BEDROOM POP follows Joanna, a songwriter struggling to find her voice in noisy New York, where bedrooms are small, walls are thin, and patience wears even thinner as she tries to “make it” as an artist—whatever that means. She turns to her best friends for support and inspiration: Emily, a high-powered lawyer whose five-year plan has spectacularly derailed; Stella, a glamorous fitness instructor with trust issues; and Kate, a self-sacrificing third-grade teacher reckoning with a complicated past. Facts, fiction, and feelings start to blur as Joanna draws on their experiences in her songwriting, all while avoiding her own emotional excavation. A story about friendship, the sanctity of intimate spaces, and the fine line between life and art, BEDROOM POP is an indie-pop-rock song cycle featuring the music we make when we think no one’s listening.

Our Artistic Goals

Our goal with BEDROOM POP is to uplift women’s voices and experiences in a moment when their perspectives are too often simplified or simply ignored. Every scene in the show takes place in a young woman’s bedroom, a personal space that has become increasingly politicized and even prosecuted as people in power wield influence over women’s choices. In their rooms, women negotiate their public and private selves—constructing and deconstructing how they present to the world, exploring relationships with friends and strangers, marking moments of profound togetherness and loneliness.

These explorations and negotiations make up the plot of BEDROOM POP, capturing a range of experiences as four women navigate life and love (and a lack thereof). The bedroom becomes a dynamic canvas, shape-shifting into fantastical spaces where each woman comes into herself, aided by the musical musings of the aspiring-indie-pop-star protagonist, Joanna. We strike a balance between comedic scenes that create space for women to be goofy and honest and irreverent, and deeply emotional songs that allow them to spill their inner worlds onto the stage. Sharing humor and showing heart are both acts of defiance for women right now, and we aim to do both with this show.
