The BRO Experience Foundation proudly presents the next installment of our Redefine Series: Real to Real Cinema— a community screening experience where film becomes a doorway into the conversations we need to have, not just the ones we're comfortable with.

This month, we're screening Native Son — the HBO Films production directed by Rashid Johnson and written by Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Suzan-Lori Parks, based on Richard Wright's groundbreaking 1940 novel. Bigger Thomas is a young Black man living with his family in Chicago, trying to find his footing in a world that offers him just enough opportunity to see what he can't have. When he lands a job as a chauffeur for a wealthy white family, he enters a seductive new world of money and power — and faces unforeseen choices and perilous circumstances that will alter the course of his life forever. Starring Ashton Sanders (Moonlight), this modern retelling doesn't let America off the hook. Director Johnson and screenwriter Parks shift the story to modern-day Chicago to parallel enduring urban inequalities — because the pressures Bigger Thomas faces aren't relics of history. They're Tuesday. As Sanders himself said: "It's always been rough for a Black man living in America. There's always pressures put on us.
