In addition to Barrier Free Living's numerous awards and honors over its 40+ year, in 2023 the agency participated in the NYS Office for the Prevention of Domestic Violence (OPDV) LGBTQ+ endorsement project.

Recent research has begun to show the intersection of Disability, LGBTQ+, and Domestic Violence. One study indicates that 3-5 million people who identify with the LGBTQ+ community also have a disability. Another study of 8,000 LGBTQ+ women indicated that 50% identified as a person with a disability and of those 47% experienced domestic violence. There is very little research around the intersection but what is known based on information and experience is that this population is experiencing high rates of victimization.
