Soulmates to Genius

Women of the Italian Renaissance wielded influence when the world thought they possessed none. Costanza D’Avalos, a Spanish noblewoman who ruled the island kingdom of Ischia, was both a diplomat and a warrior. Art scholars have speculated that she was the model for the Mona Lisa. Vittoria Colonna, a celebrated poet, encountered Michelangelo after she was widowed, and began a profound relationship with him that influenced both his art and her poetry.

Based on two books by Linda Cardillo, A Thing Miraculous and Love That Moves the Sun, the author will talk about women’s role in the Renaissance, and how some of them shaped the success of the most acclaimed geniuses of all times.

NOIAW member Linda Cardillo is an award-winning author of historical fiction and historical romance. Her novel Love That Moves the Sun was a finalist for the Foreword Indie Book of the Year and the Chaucer Award for Historical Fiction.

She is also co-founder of the independent publisher Bellastoria Press, and a teacher of creative writing.
