Jakob Barker's Story

Hello! My name is Jakob Barker, and I serve as one of the Events Coordinators for Bike4Alz Team 14. I’m from Wilmore, Kentucky, where I went to school at West Jessamine High School. I am in my second year at Western Kentucky University, where I am studying Mathematical Economics. Outside of Bike4Alz, I am a member of Phi Gamma Delta – Chi Eta, Spirit Master, and a member of the Student Government Association.

I first heard about Bike4Alz as a high schooler when I toured WKU’s campus. As an avid cyclist, this organization seemed like a natural fit for my skills and interests. However, as a student at WKU and participating in fraternity rush, I heard more about the impact of Bike4Alz and the difference that I can make through it. Bike4Alz is not just a bike ride with friends; it is an incredibly meaningful trip that shares and spreads support for Alzheimer’s Research “Coast-to-Coast.” I am doing Bike4Alz for my grandma, who suffers from White Matter Disease, a memory and cognitive condition closely linked to dementia and Alzheimer’s. Growing up, I heard her countless stories of serving in the mission field in Africa, Europe, and Asia. Now, as her condition has progressed, it’s heartbreaking to see that she doesn’t remember all that she used to. I look forward to doing this ride for her, but also for the millions of Americans across the country who suffer from Alzheimer’s and memory-related conditions. I look forward to using my time on this ride to hear stories, connect with others, and spread a message of hope.
