 📣THE BIKE-A-THON IS OFFICIAL!📣

Cycles of Change is thrilled to announce that our Lake Merritt Bike-A-Thon is back on! Originally planned for December 2020, COVID forced us to hit the brakes on this campaign, but now that Alameda County is in the least restrictive yellow tier and vaccinations are becoming more widespread, we can’t wait to (safely) get riding again!

Cycles of Change harnesses the life-changing magic of bicycles to provide leadership development, community building, and job training for East Bay youth, and we need your help! Details on how you can support 👇🏽below 👇🏽

CYCLES OF CHANGE

🚴🏽‍♀️🚴🏽🚴🏾‍♂️INVITE YOU TO SUPPORT YOUTH GETTING ON BIKES!🚴🏽‍♀️🚴🏽🚴🏾‍♂️

During this time of sheltering in place, it's more important than ever for young people to have positive outlets to move their bodies, connect with peers, and explore their communities - all from six feet apart.

Cycles of Change is offering up creative ways to engage high school students through the life-changing magic of bicycles - and we need your help!!

1) BECOME A RIDER in the Bike-A-Thon

  • Friday, June 18 / 11 AM - 12PM - Live-streamed Bike-A-Thon here on Givebutter with commentary!

OR

2) MAKE A PLEDGE: Volunteer riders in the Lake Merritt Bike-A-Thon will have a chance to test their bike riding skills by challenging themselves to ride around the lake as many times as they can in an hour in support of our campaign.  You can scroll through the roster of riders and pledge a rider PER LAP or make a one-time donation to support this work.

How do you make a pledge? HERE! (for an instructional video) or HERE! (for an instructional PDF).

How can you make a further impact? Easy! Share our campaign and encourage your friends, family, neighbors, acquaintances to make a flat donation by clicking on the Donate & Tickets button on our campaign page or text "LAKE" to (202) 858-1233 for a direct link.

Every donation ensures communities continue to pedal forward!

Do you want to join our campaign without having to ride? Yay! You can start your own campaign, on our behalf, here on our GiveButter page to reach out to your network to support this campaign!

CYCLES OF CHANGE - YOUTH DEVELOPMENT PATHWAY (YDP)

COVID Campaign helped us adjust to the pandemic, revamp our website, and expand our community bike shop, The Bikery, hours. We are always working with youth as Volunteers and Participants, interns in The Bikery, and Transitional Age Youth staff (18-24). YDP is our pathway that begins at the participant and intern level and progresses through every level of advocacy, educating, and decision making our collective handles.

  • Youth staff work with coordinators to identify areas of growth set their own goals, and get it all done.
  • All our teaching is constantly changing, changing technical demands such as Zoom, anticipating a mix of COVID safe in-person and remote learning,
  • Collective-run org: room for everybody to step up, decisions reflect all voices, reflects the vision of Cycles for the whole team to create new solutions instead of decision making in hands of few.

Our YDP is a scaffolding for equitable leadership. As part of the YDP, youth staff work with coordinators to identify areas of growth, set their own goals, and get it all done. Because Cycles of Change is collectively run, we have room for everybody to step up and contribute to organizational decisions that reflect all voices. Bringing youth staff into the collective reflects the vision of an organization where a whole team creates new solutions together instead of decision making resting in the hands of a few.

HOW DOES YOUR CONTRIBUTION MAKE AN IMPACT?

Cycles of Change Youth Development Pathway

  • Hiring
  • Training
  • Mentorship from coordinators
  • Youth staff involvement in admin/decision making via collective
  • We have contracts for educating but don’t cover training up for positions and the extra investment we give to all our youth volunteers, interns, and staff.
  • Youth paid living hourly wage, including training time
  • Hiring reflects our mission and vision of uplifting marginalized communities, make sure they have the tools/skills to carry out this work across Alameda County
  • Pathway gets kids moving up through the org and transitioning to careers outside, such as teaching and advocacy.

All donations are being processed through Cycles of Change, an exempt organization as described in Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code; 11-3821114.
