We are transforming a historic cultural center in Staunton, Virginia, and inviting you to help us restore its 87-seat movie theater in honor of William “Billy” Haines—global tastemaker, gay icon, and one of Staunton’s most extraordinary native sons.

Who Was Billy Haines?

William “Billy” Haines’ influence spans film, design, and LGBTQ+ history—yet he remains largely unknown in his hometown.

Born in Staunton, VA in 1900 he became a global cultural figure - first as MGM's top male box-office star in the 1930's, then as a groundbreaking interior designer who helped define Hollywood Regency style. A gay icon who refused to hide who he was, Billy chose authenticity over fame, living openly with his lifelong partner and reinventing himself on his own terms.

The Arcadia Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit reimagining a historic theater building in downtown Staunton, VA as a vibrant community cultural center. Our mission is rooted in creativity, reinvention and belonging - using arts and culture to reflect the full spectrum of our community and inspire future generations.

Why Give?

We are raising funds to name an intimate, 87-seat movie theater inside our restored historic building, after Billy Haines. This is a long-overdue recognition that reinforces Staunton's place on the cultural map, provides LGBTQ+ youth with a local role model, and sends a clear message that Arcadia Project values honesty, vision, and inclusion.

Your Gift Makes An Impact!

Construction is underway - and every dollar you give toward the theater is doubled through June 2026 thanks to a matching IRF Grant from the Commonwealth of Virginia. The total fundraising goal is $250,000 to renovate the movie theater and secure its naming in honor of Haines. If the full goal is not reached, a smaller space within the building will be named for Haines, scaled to the amount of funds raised.
