Hey OurSpace World Family,

The Black Land Brigade gathers young folks studying or interested in farming, food, forestry, and natural resources to volunteer their time to work, explore, and learn from the land with other like-minded students. The group camps out for several days of building resiliency, restoration, retooling, and recreation on Black-owned farmland. The goal is to support and teach by providing young folks with the opportunity to engage hands-on, in the dirt, while gaining practical experience as the next generation of land stewards. Mini brigades operate for a shorter span of time.

The first BLB was hosted at Vanguard Ranch. Student's learned the history of the land, participated in forestry & wildlife workshops, and supported on site building and beautification projects.

Activities Involved:

Hands-in-soil work
Assisted Agrarian Support
Farm to Table Food Processing
Bonfires
Camping
Communal Gathering

Each BLB explores land-based needs as well as agrarian and regenerative projects that support the farm(er) without demanding obligations, allowing land owners to share their knowledge and expertise while receiving physical support on pre-planned land projects.

Our Goals:

Black Land Brigade gathers folks studying or interested in farming, food, forestry, and natural resources to volunteer their time to work, explore, and learn from the land with other like-minded folks.

Additionally, the Black Land Brigade aims to reawaken a new generation of Black individuals devoted to the land and its regenerative care. With your help we can assist, in not only the support of our communal partners but also the undertaking of new knowledge bases and commitments.

Our September 2026 Mini-Brigade:

As a collective, in 2026, we aim to gather potential community partners (folks who will return to provide future support) onsite to work at A Heart 4 People Farms. AH4P Farms is a Maryland-based farm within the Aquasco, Maryland area committed to serving their local community. With a dedication to strengthening sustainable farming practices, they aim to cultivate a healthy and culturally inclusive mindset for all.

For this upcoming brigade, set for Sept.17-20th, the Black Land Brigade will stay on the AH4P Farms land to assist in projects and farm-based support. Amongst other plans, such projects include:

Complete construction of fencing for deer control-
Cultivate remainder of high tunnel
Bed prep A Heart 4 People field (beginner friendly)
Construct shading/cover to create temporary wash/pack area
Farm stand
Expansion of animal shelters
Construction of rainwater catchment system
Restoration of the greenhouse

In doing so, the Brigade aim to provide immediate and restorative support to AHAP Farm through build-outs, renovations, hands-on support, practical skills, planting and harvesting. Furthermore, through participation in this project, we hope to encourage future participation as prospective community partners of the Black Land Brigade and the A Heart 4 People Farms!
