Empty Bowls was born from a simple but powerful idea: artists using their hands to feed their neighbors. In Puerto Peñasco, our founder Renée Shearer has been carrying that idea almost entirely on her own — hand-throwing more than 300 bowls every year on a single pottery wheel, fired in one small kiln, to fuel our annual events and the food assistance they make possible.

That's an incredible amount of love baked into clay. But it's not sustainable forever — and Renée knows it.

So she's doing something about it. Renée is now teaching the next generation of ceramic artists in Puerto Peñasco, so this tradition can grow and thrive long after any one person's hands need a rest. 🤲
