Breckin’s Story

Breckin Elizabeth Helms was born on December 3, 2014, and was immediately rushed to the NICU. Diagnosed in utero with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a congenital heart defect, Breckin’s first six months were marked by multiple surgeries and hospitalizations, including two heart operations. She was also born without optic nerves, which meant she was blind.

Despite all her health problems and developmental delays, she thrived in life! She slowly but surely began to smile, eat on her own, crawl, sit up, talk, and eventually walk with the assistance of her walker. She was constantly learning new things and amazed us everyday with what she could do. She developed a beautiful personality that brought joy to everyone she met. She loved to make people laugh by telling jokes or speaking in her British accent, and she loved to get to know you by asking questions about yourself. Singing, books, and swinging were her favorite hobbies!

However, even with her zest for life and sunny disposition, Breckin’s heart condition remained incurable. On August 18, 2019, her health took a sharp decline as her heart began to fail. She stayed in the hospital for three days fighting for her life, and then on August 21, the Lord took her home.

Why Spreading Sunshine?

From the moment we learned of Breckin’s heart defect, through her birth, life, and eventual passing, we have been surrounded by loved ones. Family, friends, and our church family have been a crucial part of our story. We were never alone in the hospital, and after her death, we were never alone in our grief.

People have gone above and beyond to love us and be the hands and feet of Jesus. And this is why we want to use Breckin’s Miracle Mile to support the mission of Spreading Sunshine. So many families out there do not have the support we have, and we want to give back to families who need it!
