For ten years, Bryce Miller was a beloved sports columnist for The San Diego Union-Tribune. He died on Saturday, March 22, 2025 after a lengthy battle with bladder cancer.

His friends and family established this scholarship fund with Cancer for College as a way to keep his spirit and joy for storytelling alive. The fund will award need-based college scholarships and educational experiences to cancer survivors that want to pursue a career as a writer or journalist.

Bryce was a passionate storyteller. As the U-T’s sports columnist, Miller told stories of San Diegans at their highest — and lowest. Just last summer, Miller stood on the White House’s South Lawn when Point Loma Nazarene’s women’s soccer team was hailed by Vice President Kamala Harris for winning the Division II national championship. Days later, he was in the Nationals Park press box as Dylan Cease threw the second no-hitter in Padres history.

During his 35-year-career, he covered six Olympics and had written from the World Series and MLB All-Star Game, Final Four, Kentucky Derby, Preakness Stakes, college football championship game, Rose Bowl, NFL playoffs, U.S. Open, PGA Championship and countless PGA Tour events — among other national events. His career took him to Mexico City, the Dominican Republic and Seoul, South Korea, to cover the Padres; Eritrea, Africa, to trace the childhood roots of Boston Marathon winner and Olympian Meb Keflezighi; and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, to chronicle the world’s richest fishing tournament.

Miller was an annual voter for the Heisman Trophy and Wooden Award. He was a former college football and basketball Top 25 voter and is a member of the Baseball Writers Association of America. He’s an Emmy, Eclipse Award and multi-time APSE winner.
