Prevention Every Learner Can Access

Safety information only works when a learner can receive it, understand it, and use it.

Many prevention programs rely on spoken presentations, standard print, abstract language, and one expected way of communicating. These approaches do not work equally well for every child or young person.

A learner who uses American Sign Language, Braille, large print, visual supports, simplified language, assistive technology, or another communication method should not be excluded from essential information about boundaries, online contact, trusted adults, help-seeking, disclosure, and safer response.

HopeWorks Global is developing VITAL to help close this access gap.

HopeWorks VITAL is an accessibility-centered prevention program for children and youth who benefit from communication, cognitive, sensory, learning, mobility, or other supports. It will also provide practical guidance for caregivers, educators, professionals, and organizations responsible for their safety.

Your contribution will help turn the VITAL framework into practical learning modules and accessible prevention materials.

What Your Contribution Will Support

Accessible learning modules

HopeWorks Global will develop and adapt prevention content using:

Clear and concrete language
Structured teaching
Visual supports
Accessible digital layouts
Caregiver and facilitator guidance
Multiple ways for learners to understand information
Multiple ways for learners to ask questions and communicate concerns

The goal is not to create a lower standard of prevention. The goal is to make essential safety concepts accessible to more learners.

American Sign Language access

Initial signed-language production will focus on American Sign Language.

Funding will support qualified interpretation or translation, Deaf-informed review, captions, transcripts, and accessible presentation design.

Sign languages are distinct languages. American Sign Language is not a universal substitute for other signed languages. Any future adaptation into additional signed languages will require qualified local linguistic and cultural review.

Braille and accessible print

Funding will support:

Professionally transcribed and proofread Braille editions
Large-print companion materials
Accessible electronic documents
Materials compatible with assistive technology
Practical resources for learners, caregivers, educators, facilitators, and partner organizations

How the Materials Will Be Developed

1. Content and safeguarding review

HopeWorks Global will define learning objectives, age and developmental considerations, role boundaries, and safer-response guidance before materials are produced.

The content must strengthen access to prevention information without placing responsibility for preventing exploitation on the child.

2. Accessibility adaptation

Qualified accessibility specialists and people with relevant lived and professional experience will help review and adapt the content, language, presentation, and delivery methods.

Accessibility will be incorporated during development, not added after the materials are completed.

3. Pilot testing and quality assurance

Materials will be reviewed for comprehension, usability, signed-language accuracy, Braille accuracy, caption and transcript quality, digital accessibility, facilitator guidance, and safeguarding concerns.

Feedback will be used to revise the materials before wider distribution.

4. Production and distribution

Approved video, digital, Braille, large-print, caregiver, and facilitator materials will be completed and distributed through appropriate HopeWorks Global channels and partnerships.

The number and sequence of modules produced will depend on available funding, qualified partners, accessibility review, and actual production costs.

Why This Work Matters

When prevention information is not provided in a usable format, children and youth can be excluded from the very education intended to strengthen their safety.

That exclusion is not a limitation of the learner. It is a limitation of how the information was designed and delivered.

VITAL is being developed to reduce that barrier while maintaining strong safeguarding, accessibility, and quality standards.

The goal is prevention that fits the learner, instead of requiring the learner to fit a standard presentation.

Accountability

HopeWorks Global will report verified development and production information as it becomes available, including:

VITAL modules started and completed
Accessibility formats produced
Qualified specialists involved and their roles
Pilot testing stages completed
Revisions made in response to review
Organizations requesting, reviewing, or using the materials
Distribution figures for completed resources

Progress reports will not disclose identifying or sensitive information about individual children or families.
