A history that has never been written down.

Latino journalists have shaped DFW newsrooms for decades, but little to no comparable workforce data exists on their careers, challenges, or contributions. Many of their stories predate the digital era and have never been formally documented anywhere.

By the Numbers is changing that. Built on a survey instrument independently reviewed for academic rigor, the project is designed to capture the full arc of the Latino journalist experience — from first job to lessons learned — and to produce findings that inform media organizations, journalism schools, nonprofits, funders, and industry advocates.

Open to every journalist who has ever worked in DFW.

Whether someone spent one year in a DFW newsroom or built a decades-long career here, their experience matters. The survey is open to any journalist who has ever worked in the DFW market, regardless of when, how long, or where their career took them afterward. The project also runs a Student Ambassador Program, engaging journalism students directly in outreach.

Built on trust.

This project has made commitments to the community it documents, without exception:

Research data will never be for sale — ever
Respondent identities are protected at every stage of publication
The survey instrument is independently validated for methodological integrity
All findings will be made public — this research belongs to the community

Backed by real infrastructure.

By the Numbers is proud to be fiscally sponsored by the Alliance for Community Impact (ACI), which provides the nonprofit framework that allows philanthropic, corporate, and community supporters to invest in this work — while keeping the project itself independently led.

"This research is for and about the storytellers of North Texas, past and present," says founder Magda Salazar. "Having Alliance for Community Impact alongside us provides critical infrastructure and reinforces our commitment to making this work accessible to the people and institutions who can learn from it — while keeping the project itself independent."

"Journalism plays an essential role in building informed, connected, and thriving communities," says Denise Huginnie, CEO and Managing Director of ACI. "This project closely aligns with our commitment to education, collaboration, and expanding pathways to opportunity."

Why Give Now

This is a seed-level, community-funded launch. Every dollar raised goes directly toward getting this research to the people and institutions who can act on it — media organizations, journalism schools, funders, and the journalists themselves. There is no gift too small to move this forward.

Help build the record that's never existed. Give today and be part of documenting who DFW's Latino journalists were, who they are, and what they believe comes next.
