Turning Waves into Opportunity

In Lambert’s Bay, South Africa, many young people have talent and drive, but face limited opportunities, exposure to violence, and too few safe spaces to grow. Project Sunwave exists to change that.

By combining academics with surfing, stand-up paddling, ocean safety, and mentorship, we empower young people to build confidence, resilience, and essential life skills. Our programs provide positive role models, literacy and academic support, and clear pathways to leadership, further study, and employment—showing youth that their futures are possible.

On 26 December, Project Sunwave hosted the Lambert’s Bay Legends Festival, a one-day sport and community celebration that brought together nearly 1,000 participants. The festival featured 10 beach soccer teams and 26 beach touch rugby teams, including women’s and youth divisions that are often excluded from organized sport.

Teams and families travelled from the Northern Cape, Boland, and Cape Town, creating a high-spirited, inclusive event where community members and young people connected through sport.

Beyond the field, the Legends Festival stimulated local businesses and reinforced Lambert’s Bay as a vibrant, family-friendly coastal destination—creating safe spaces, strengthening communities, and turning waves into opportunity for the next generation.
