Object Overview

This sculpture, an ascending spiral helix of steel rod topped with vibrantly hued glass, is created from re-formed, recycled scrap steel and fused glass pieces and shards.

The bent steel structure mimics vegetation and the torque of vines and leaves. It is topped with fanciful flowers of fused glass, reflecting light through the petals. It stands 4 feet tall and is 2.5 feet wide at its broadest point.

Stylistic Features

The sculpture serves as a reflection on the cycles of nature - destruction and renewal. By transforming scrap into fanciful interpretations of vegetation, the piece physically enacts the regeneration it depicts.

The rough symmetry and spiral motion suggest a natural harmony and uplifting flow. The sculpture provides a striking silhouette against any outdoor landscape with the dark finish of the steel combined with the vibrant colors of glass. The treated and painted steel is weather-resistant, and the flowers and leaves are detachable, designed for durability and ease of transport.

The steel work in this sculpture was created locally at CraterWorks Makerspace; the glass work at Lightgarden Glass Art Studio. All proceeds from the sale of this work will be donated to the CraterWorks equipment fund.
