Art for the Black Canyon

When lightning struck the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park on July 10th, 2025, our community watched in heartbreak as flames spread across the South Rim. The fire left behind not only a scar on the land but also an ache in the hearts of those who love this incredible place.

As the smoke rose, so did our community in pain, but also in unity. Among those most deeply moved were the artists who have spent years, and for many, decades, weaving the Canyon’s natural beauty into their work. Their art has long captured the soul of this landscape, the shadows, the light, the silence, and the strength of the stone walls that define it.

In the days that followed, Friends of the Black Canyon began attending community events, listening to stories, and feeling the collective grief and concern from neighbors, visitors, and park enthusiasts. Many shared tears, memories, and hopes for the park’s recovery.

Even before the fire was fully contained, local artists and contributors like John and Kelly Gibson from Secret Creek, Tim Frates from Mega Pixle, Fran Leblanc, and others reached out with a powerful idea: let’s bring the art community together to heal and to help. From that spark, Art for the Canyon was born.

This one-of-a-kind benefit event will feature signature, original artwork donated by talented local and regional artists, all created in love and reverence for the Canyon. Every piece represents both beauty and resilience, and every bid helps fund the park’s restoration and recovery.

Artwork will be available for online viewing, with in-person and online bidding open until the live event on February 28th at The Association in Montrose, Colorado. Bidding will close at 7:15 PM, when the winners will be announced.

We invite our local and surrounding communities to come together for this prestigious evening of art, celebration, and connection, and to stand with us in supporting the renewal of one of our nation’s greatest treasures.
