A Home for Culture, Community, and Opportunity

Imagine arriving in a new city, thousands of miles from home. You carry with you a rich culture, traditions, and dreams for your family—but there is no place where you truly feel seen. No gathering place where your children can learn the stories of their ancestors. No central hub to connect with trusted resources, celebrate your heritage, or find a community that understands your journey.

For many members of Sacramento's African Diaspora, this was the reality.

In 2018, a group of visionary community leaders came together with a simple but powerful belief: everyone deserves a place to belong. They envisioned more than a community center—they dreamed of creating a home where African cultures could be celebrated, families could thrive, youth could discover pride in their identity, and neighbors from every background could come together in the spirit of Ubuntu—"I am because we are."

That dream became Africa House Sacramento (AHS).

Since its incorporation as a nonprofit in 2020, Africa House Sacramento has become a trusted community anchor, filling a critical gap in the region. Guided by its mission to serve the African Diaspora and the broader Sacramento community through cultural education, economic development, family health and wellness, youth leadership, civic engagement, and community service, AHS has transformed lives by creating meaningful opportunities for connection and growth.

When the COVID-19 pandemic threatened vulnerable communities, Africa House Sacramento stepped forward to partner with the City of Sacramento, helping bring lifesaving vaccine outreach and trusted health education to those who needed it most. As isolation grew, AHS became a source of hope, information, and support.

Today, that same commitment continues through year-round programs that strengthen individuals and families. From vibrant arts and cultural festivals that celebrate Africa's extraordinary diversity, to youth leadership initiatives that inspire the next generation, to educational workshops, civic engagement, advocacy, and community partnerships, Africa House Sacramento is building bridges across cultures while empowering African and Black communities to flourish.

The annual Ubuntu Benefit Dinner, which now brings together more than 200 community members each year, is a powerful reminder of what is possible when people unite around a shared vision of belonging, dignity, and opportunity.

But this is only the beginning.

The need for a permanent home has never been greater. Every family seeking culturally relevant resources, every young person searching for identity and belonging, every elder hoping to pass on traditions, and every neighbor eager to experience the richness of African cultures deserves a place where these connections can thrive.
