During the spring of 2001, Roger Akers assigned one of his graduate classes at SFA University a research project to determine whether any prescription assistance existed for low‑income individuals. That assignment ultimately led to the creation of what is now known as Community RX Help.

Roger then brought together a group of concerned citizens—including administrators from Medical Center and Memorial Hospital—to form the organization’s first board of directors. In those early days, the program was sustained through a personal loan and generous community donations, which allowed for the hiring of the first program director.

In October 2001, Community RX Help was officially recognized as a 501(c)(3) tax‑exempt organization. Since 2002, the program has also received ongoing support from United Way.

At that time, the service area included Nacogdoches, Shelby, and San Augustine counties. We assist individuals of all ages, including SFA students who may be struggling financially and unable to afford their medications. Already this year, we have helped patients obtain $1.9 million worth of medications.
