Through the ages into our modern times, music has been a constant companion of humans, and a core part of the heritage passed down in societies from one generation to the next. At ChiME we believe music has the power to change lives. It helps us understand the world, express and process emotions, and connect with others. It decreases stress in the body, stimulates and inspires the mind, encourages and lifts the spirit, and opens up the heart. It can help fulfill the basic human need to belong and to feel understood and loved. It is often a catalyst for change, a call to action, or an anthem of courage and unity.

We believe that everyone should have access to the many benefits of music, regardless of their economic status or learning ability. Music is not a mandated part of the curriculum in the Chicago schools, and there are thousands of students who don’t experience its benefits through their education. ChiME fills this void by bringing music to those children in our city who don't have access.

ChiME students engage in activities that build a life-long joy and love of music while also working on becoming better humans. Through our programs, they have opportunities to tap into their creativity, express themselves musically, and develop their skills and character. As a result, they are growing into responsible, effective citizens, who will build a brighter future. Through our programs and music therapy services, today we serve nearly 3,300 children at our location in West Town and 26 partner organizations, 17 of which are Chicago Public Elementary schools. Approximately 35% of the children we serve have disabilities, are neurodivergent, or require learning support and 70% are economically disadvantaged.

We hope to raise $132,000 through this year’s “Growing Through Music” Gala. Gifts from donors like you will make it possible for us to continue expanding our services to more schools, more classrooms, and more students. Your support will help ChiME hire, develop, and prepare teaching artists and therapists to deliver the best instruction possible. It will provide instruments and materials for students and classrooms. It will help us offer continued tuition assistance to existing recipients and provide access to new students.
