The recent election results will undoubtedly embolden extremists working to undermine public education and, with it, the very foundation of our democracy. But like many others, you may wonder: What can I do at the local level? With the right training, organization, and resources, Defense of Democracy volunteers are winning these battles every day.

As a Chapter Chair for Columbia County, PA, I've seen firsthand how we can make a difference. Last year, when my local School Board proposed harmful anti-LGBTQIA+ policies disguised as "parental rights," I mobilized our team, rallied the community, and drew media attention. Our presence and opposition forced the Board to table the proposal, sending a clear message: Our schools will not be a battleground for hate. This is just one of hundreds of victories. Since its inception, Defense of Democracy has mobilized 4,500+ volunteers nationwide to protect public schools and libraries from attacks like book bans and educator intimidation.

In the past year alone, we've:

Increased our team by 50%, with 58 chapters in 18 states and over 125 students engaged.
Held 50+ events, raising $20,000 to safeguard schools and libraries.
Collected 30,000+ signatures in support of public education.

But there's so much more to do. The fight for our democracy requires growing local chapters, across the country and equipping them to succeed.
