This online auction, taking place from December 1 to 8, 2025, features the ceramic work of New York City based artist Linda Marks Katz.

All proceeds will benefit Light My Way Career Day, a not-for-profit organization founded by Linda. Our program assists children attending underserved public schools in NYC to envision who they could become and feel empowered to turn that vision into reality.

Artist’s Statement

This collection was unconsciously inspired by the glasswork of Dale Chihuly. My mother, an art lover, has one of his pieces and every time I visit her, I am struck by its beauty. My sister thought that I may have been influenced by his work. I agree.

The pieces were made by draping a slab of clay over vase-shaped forms. It’s not hard to do. The challenge is shaping the folds upside down, waiting days for the clay to dry to leather hard, and only then turning it right side up. The shape suddenly appears, starts to breathe life, and reveals itself.

The thickness of the clay slab dictates the variety of shapes that emerge from this single process. The clay used is a cone 10 high-fire stoneware. The glazes are layered, often creating a multi-dimensional atmospheric effect.

Pots in progress

Pottery is my teacher. For someone who likes on-the-spot results, giving up control over the outcome and sticking with the process is not easy! Many processes are like this in life where one has control over the process but little control over the outcome . . . . like cooking a new dish, fishing, playing an instrument, raising a child.

I am grateful to the Clay Art Center Community, my teacher Keiko Ashida, and their dedicated staff. They foster self-expression and wholeheartedly support every aspect of creating clay objects.

Louis came to Career Day as the Floral Designer and taught our inner-city students how to pot and care for a begonia they could take home. Touching soil for the first time and understanding the anatomy of a plant was a revelation for his students.

These vessels are dedicated to the memory of my beloved classmate, Sally Spielvogel, who was a lifelong learner and loving spirit. Her spirit lives on in all who knew her.
