Four winters ago, Russia invaded Ukraine. The world believed Ukraine would fall in a few short days; but Ukraine hoped. Days turned into weeks; and weeks into months as the Ukrainians fought and garnered the world’s hope. But as months turned into years, the world’s hope gave way to dull acceptance. The ear, turns out, can become accustomed to the barrage of drone strikes and the hail of gunfire.

But Ukraine cannot simply tune out the sounds of war. They reverberate too close to home—if such a notion still is—where rubble lines the streets and ash chokes the air. And still, hope. Hope the war will end. Hope that swords may be beat into plowshares. Hope that homes may be rebuilt.

Yet a particularly clear note of hope sits above the dissonance: the hope of Christ. Through the clamor of mortality, the sure hope of Christ sounds her clarion call. He is hope in life and death. He is hope for salvation from sin. He is hope eternal. He is hope for Ukraine.
