Inspired Art
Inspired Art is an art exhibition & reception resulting from a unique collaboration between local artists and Boston Scores elementary school Poet-Athletes. Community artists review a book of poems composed recently by Boston Scores 4th-6th grade Poet-Athletes. Selecting one poem as their inspiration, each creator contributes one piece in their favored medium (pencil, ink, oil, photography, sculpture, etc.). Guests at Inspired Art may bid on each piece and proceeds from the art auction will directly advance the work of Boston Scores. The event features over 40 original works of art as well as a short speaking program and the performance of an original poem by a Boston Scores Poet-Athlete.
Story
Boston Scores’ programs were born out of the desire to close the opportunity gap for students in inner-city Boston, with a specific focus on soccer and enrichment activities. While soccer is generally played across economic classes internationally, the sport is organized around a “pay to play” model in the United States, requiring considerable financial contributions to cover equipment costs, travel expenses, club fees, and much more. Play equity gaps quickly become health equity gaps, posing debilitating effects on the mental and physical wellbeing of young people.
Through Scores, students can join a free soccer team at their school. After their practices, they move with their team from the pitch to the classroom, where they engage in hands-on curricula geared towards their interest levels. They experience the benefits of physical activity, positive relationships with peers and coach-mentors, and emerge empowered to make positive changes in their lives and in their communities.
