The Story

They say you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover, but we’re a little different. At the Louisville Book Festival, we judge a city by its bookshelves.

Founded in 2018, we started with a simple but radical plot point: Literacy is a fundamental human right. We aren’t just a weekend event with some nice paperbacks and a few pens; we are a year-round movement dedicated to the idea that every child deserves a "Once Upon a Time" that doesn't end in a book desert.

In a world where one in four adults in Kentucky struggles to read, we aren't just selling books—we’re selling the keys to the city. From our It Pays to Read program to the thousands of books we give away every year, we are working to ensure that a child's zip code never dictates their vocabulary.

The Mission

The Louisville Book Festival is a 501(c) (3) non-profit organization founded in 2018 to celebrate and promote the love and the benefits of reading, writing, and literacy. We believe that literacy is a fundamental human right and that there is power and purpose in bringing books to life every day of the year. We celebrate books and use them to highlight and grow the resilient culture of our vibrant city, as well as to encourage and elevate our creative thinking as a community.
