The Little Black Dress Initiative

The Junior League of Greater Orlando participates in the Little Black Dress Initiative (LBDI). LBDI is a week-long social media and community events campaign that uses the iconic “little black dress” to raise awareness about poverty in the Orlando community. Traditionally, LBDI participants wear a black dress or an all-black outfit for five consecutive days to illustrate the effects poverty can have on our society. A button that reads, “Ask Me About My Dress” helps invite dialogue among colleagues, friends and strangers. The JLGO hosts LBDI community events during the week-long campaign, and participants are encouraged to harness the power of social media to drive online donations, raising funds to benefit JLGO’s mission and our partner organizations.

Our mission is to advance women’s leadership for meaningful community impact through volunteer action, collaboration, and training. Our purpose is exclusively educational and charitable.
JLGO is a 100% volunteer-run organization.

- HIP Kids Events: “Healthy Informed and Playful Kids (H.I.P. Kids)“ Committee hosts annual events serving at risk youth living in a food desert. Events include a holiday party, a health fair and a field day all centered on encouraging both physical and mental healthy choices.
- MAGIC: “Mentoring Adolescent Girls to Inspire Change (M.A.G.I.C.)“ Committee hosts monthly mentoring sessions for young women in foster care, providing both education and encouragement for the next generation of women in Orlando.
- Nonprofit Support with Additional (Wo)manpower: JLGO provides trained volunteers to support Greater Orlando nonprofits that align with our mission – providing additional (Wo)manpower to local nonprofits! Long-term partners include Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida, Harbor House of Central Florida, Second Harvest Food Bank, Girl Scouts of America, Ronald McDonald House ...and many, many more!
