My name is Cody Butler. I am a husband, a father to a young son, and a law enforcement officer who has served my community since January 2012. I am sharing my story because I am raising support to pursue stem cell treatment and continue working toward greater mobility, stability, and independence.

About me

In December 2022, I began feeling a burning sensation in my right hip, followed by a TV static feeling throughout my right leg. My condition progressed quickly. I developed severe sensitivity to hot and cold, loss of strength, difficulty balancing, bladder and bowel issues, and trouble breathing. Eventually, my left leg also became significantly weaker.

Over a short period of time, I went from walking independently to using a cane and ultimately a wheelchair.

I underwent surgery in March 2023. The surgery stopped the rapid decline, but I was left with lasting neurological and mobility problems. Since then, I have worked hard to regain strength and independence, and I have continued pursuing every reasonable opportunity to improve my condition.

My public service

My public service has been through law enforcement, where I have served my community since 2012. Although my physical condition changed the duties I am able to perform, I have maintained my law enforcement credentials and continued serving in an administrative and support capacity.

My department adjusted my responsibilities so I could continue contributing in areas such as accreditation, policy development, grants, evidence management, public records, and community outreach.

What I am seeking treatment for

My condition stemmed from two bulging discs in my neck. The discs were pressing on my spinal cord and slowly bruising it. What started as burning pain in my right hip and abnormal sensations in my right leg progressed over about three months into significant neurological impairment.

Before surgery, I went from using a cane to requiring a wheelchair. I had very little control of my entire left leg, left hip, and the left side of my abdomen.

Even after surgery, I continue to experience foot drop, lower body weakness, instability, neuropathy in my feet, muscle twitching, swelling, knee hyperextension, core weakness, and intermittent bladder and bowel symptoms. I have also suffered falls and a broken foot because of the instability.

How this affects daily life

These symptoms affect nearly every part of my day. Mobility and balance are unpredictable, and the weakness and instability make simple tasks harder than they should be. I have had to adapt the way I move, work, and live.

Even with these challenges, I have remained committed to my family and my career. I have continued exercising, working, and doing everything I can to stay strong and keep moving forward.

Why I am seeking stem cell treatment now

After surgery and ongoing recovery, I am still living with lasting neurological and mobility problems. I am pursuing stem cell treatment because I want to keep building on the progress I have made and give myself the best chance at improved function, stability, and quality of life.

What I am hoping to achieve

My greatest motivation is my family. I want to be physically capable of keeping up with my son, supporting my wife, and remaining an active and dependable part of their lives.

My hope is to improve my mobility and stability, reduce the symptoms that limit my daily life, and regain more independence. Even modest improvements would make a meaningful difference for me and my family.
