It Started with One Home. And a Community That Showed Up.

In 1996, 19-year-old Jess Markt was in a devastating car accident that left him paralyzed. His father Bill, a local contractor, was suddenly facing a future filled with unknowns. But he wasn’t alone.

Friends, neighbors, and fellow builders rallied around the family—working together to modify the Markt home so Jess could return from the hospital. Then they went a step further, making Jess’s fraternity house at the University of Oregon accessible so he could return to college. That spirit of compassion, skill, and community? It became ReFIT.

Today, that same spirit drives everything we do. ReFIT is a nonprofit powered by volunteers—contractors, remodelers, donors, volunteers and partners—working together to provide no-cost home modifications for low-income homeowners living with disabilities.

We build wheelchair ramps, install grab bars, widen doorways, create barrier-free showers—simple changes that make a world of difference. Our work keeps people safe, independent, and in the homes they love.
