Our Founder, Christy Vogel's story

At the age of 11, Christy Vogel learned she was hearing impaired. Unaware of her loss, Christy had been combining sound and facial expressions to figure out what people were saying; sometimes responding slowly, people thought she was slow or “stupid.” It wasn’t until Christy was in her 20s, despite her hearing impairment, that she was able to afford her first pair of hearing aids. It changed her world. This experience inspired her to start Sounding Joy, a charity in the Tampa Bay area whose mission is to ensure children who suffer from hearing loss have the resources to get hearing aids and, ultimately, realize their full potential.

A child’s ears provide more than just hearing.

Hearing loss is not curable. However, treatment with the use of amplification will allow your child to regain most of the aspects of hearing well.

Ears are important, but hearing actually happens in the brain. Provided with reliable information from the ears, a child’s brain uses sound to detect direction, spatial localization, depth perception, and balance.

Research shows children with hearing loss, when compared to children with normal hearing, are:

2 times as likely to become addicted to drugs and alcohol.
5.5 times as likely to have attempted suicide.
10 times as likely to be held back at least one grade level.
