Why We Gather: Responding to Today's Challenges

The Healing and Justice Center (HJC) was founded by Azucena Ortiz and Jorge Rivera, whose personal journeys from adversity to advocacy inspire our mission. Azucena's escape from a cycle of trauma and Jorge's commitment to systemic change reflect our belief that healing begins within.

Today, our communities face unprecedented challenges. The Trump administration's policies have disproportionately harmed communities of color, immigrants, and LGBTQ+ individuals. Actions such as the rollback of protections for transgender individuals, attacks on immigrant rights, and the undermining of democratic institutions threaten our collective well-being.:

Termination of Diversity and Inclusion Initiatives: Executive Orders have led to the dismantling of diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) programs within federal agencies. This rollback affects hiring practices and reduces opportunities for underrepresented groups, undermining decades of progress toward equality.
Attacks on Affirmative Action and Fair Housing Protections: The reversal of policies like the Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing Rule perpetuates residential segregation and limits access to quality housing for people of color, reinforcing systemic inequality.
Suppression of Diversity Training: The cessation of federal funding for diversity training initiatives hampers efforts to address systemic biases and promote cultural competency among public servants, impacting the quality of services received by marginalized communities.

These actions highlight the urgent need for unity and collective healing.
