It all started in 2005. With very few galleries scattered across the 918 square miles of Duval County in Jacksonville, Florida, artists lacked a place to thrive, grow and share their work. Recognizing a need for a unified place for artists to meet, a handful of artists met after an art summit in 2005.

The dedication of a small group led to the formation of what would become The Art Center Cooperative.

In March 2006, the first board of officers was elected. Inspired by the Torpedo Factory and its programs in Alexandria, VA., and determined to succeed, this group of artists overcame many obstacles. In October of 2006, the Main Gallery on Adams Street was opened to the public. The Art Center emerged. In 2007, by-laws and articles of incorporation were filed and the Art Center received its 501(c)(3) status.

Despite having to move around to various locations, the Art Center has remained resilient and diligent, and for the last 20 years TAC has operated a display gallery for our members and operated rental studios for local artists to create their art. TAC holds 5 jury open call shows at its gallery; and coordinates shows with the Jacksonville Artists Guild at the Main Library downtown and at North Point Dental bringing art to a larger audience. The Art Center is dedicated to outreach and has worked with local Title 1 Elementary Schools and non-profit organizations working with underserved communities by providing murals and art workshops.

Over the years TAC has:

Had 150 artist members

Provided space for 125 studio artists

Has hosted nearly 100 art shows

Created 20 murals

Hosted over 100 workshops

Twenty years later we are still a volunteer organization and bring art to more people than ever.
