For more than 50 years, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has worked to transform San Francisco’s streets and neighborhoods into safe, just, and livable places by promoting the bicycle for everyday transportation. Through grassroots organizing, SFBike has helped shape the streetscape and city policies to improve safety and access on our streets for all SF residents.

Our advocacy empowers marginalized communities, demystifies city processes, and fosters civic engagement. Our work to create positive change on our streets is grounded in four core values of transportation justice, sustainability, people power, and joy. When streets are prioritized for people instead of cars–and when the transit system serves all residents–our city’s diverse residents can thrive economically, culturally, and socially.

Programs, like Bike to Wherever Day, developed in partnership with community-based organizations, build trust and open the door to imagining new, sustainable ways for residents to move through, and connect with the city. Some of those riders will have a bike because of our Bike It Forward program, which removes financial barriers to bike ownership and maintenance, and partnering with trusted, grassroots neighborhood organizations in equity-priority communities.

Equity means supporting residents’ self determination in how they get around, many of whom would not be able to own a car, and connecting them with the immense joy that comes from biking.
