Imagine sitting at a stoplight, witnessing a veteran pleading for help on the roadside. You might wonder, "How did they end up here?" You may feel compelled to hand over spare change yet doubt its capacity to truly aid them. However, there is a transformative solution in Hillsborough County that can alleviate this issue.

In our county, home to over 93,000 veterans, we cherish and honor our heroes, ensuring they reside in a supportive community. However, code enforcement can become a daunting reality for veteran homeowners, particularly those overwhelmed by life's hurdles, leading to neglected properties and escalating problems. It's the beginning of a precarious slide towards hopelessness and potential homelessness, exacerbated by age, illnesses, disabilities, and limited financial means.

But there's hope through Operation Code Vet (OCV)—established in 2017 with a mission to replace traditional punitive measures with community-driven support. OCV partners with Hillsborough County Code Enforcement to uplift veterans by transforming their homes through generous donations of labor and materials. Local vendors and fellow veterans unite, creating a safe haven where veterans can gracefully "age in place" and relish their rightful home.

As the year winds down and the season of and Christmas approaches, now is the ideal moment to contribute to this life-changing cause. Thanks to your continued support OCV has been able to build a new home for two homeless veterans, replace more than eight veteran roofs, repair several veterans with plumbing and AC issues as well as conduct more than 20 landscaping clean ups-but your support is crucial in order for OCV to continue the mission of housing stability for our veterans!
